Preparations for Gynecological Ultrasound

Preparations for Sonohystogram Ultrasound:

  • No prep is needed for this procedure; your bladder DOES NOT need to be full. We do suggest you take 400mg of ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, etc.) one hour beforehand.
  • For optimal imaging, day 5-8 of your cycle is best to perform this exam.
  • If you start your period prior to this exam, please call the office.
  • Plan on 1 hour to complete this exam.

Preparations For An Abdominal Ultrasound:

  • Please drink 24 ounces of clear fluid, one hour before your appointment.
  • A full bladder is necessary to obtain high quality images of the pelvic organs.
  • The ultrasound results will be limited without a full bladder.
  • Plan on 30 to 45 minutes to complete this exam, assuming your bladder is fully prepped prior to the start of your exam.

Preparation for a Transvaginal Ultrasound:

  • You DO NOT need to drink fluid prior to your exam. A full bladder is not necessary to obtain quality images of the pelvic region when using the transvaginal probe.
  • Plan on 30 to 45 minutes to complete this exam.

Preparations for an Abdominal and Transvaginal Ultrasound:

  • Please drink 24 ounces of clear fluid 1 hour before your appointment. A FULL bladder is necessary to obtain high quality images of the pelvic organs. The ultrasound results will be limited without a full bladder.
