Preparations for a Biophysical and/or Amniotic Fluid Index Ultrasound

  • Biophysical profile (BPP) studies evaluates the status of the fetus looking at movement, muscle tone, breathing and fluid volume.
  • Amniotic fluid index (AFI) studies evaluate the fluid surrounding the baby.
  • Plan on 45 minutes to complete this exam.


To best evaluate the baby's well being, please follow the instructions listed below within one hour of your scheduled exam:

  • Eat a healthy meal or healthy snack (This will help stimulate the baby's activity).
  • Drink 12 ounces of fluid- A full bladder is not necessary (This will help stimulate the baby's activity).
  • Refrain from smoking (This will interfere with the baby's activity).
